City to Tightens Foods and Drugs Supervision

The rampant of drugs or food contains hazardous substances in capital makes the Jakarta Governor, Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (Ahok) to tighten the monitoring of the products in the markets by cooperating with BPOM (Food and Drug Monitoring Agency).

Basuki said, the cooperation between Jakarta Provincial Government and BPOM is aimed to crack down markets that sell the food contains of hazardous substances.

"The cooperation is similar as the cooperation with the former of Bareskrim,  Suhardi Alius. At that time, if we found drugs three times in one discotheque, we will close discotheque immediately. Then, we will apply the same sanction for the market who found selling the food contains of chemical substances," said Basuki, at city hall, Tuesday (1/27).

His side, Basuki continued, will revoke the business license if they found traders that sell products with chemical substance in three times a row.

This firm action is taken to reduce the number of cancer in Jakarta because the using of chemical in foods, drugs, and cosmetics for a long term could harm the health.

"So we want to create MoU (memorandum of understanding). If we found the factory, we will revoke the business license," he continued.

Head of Jakarta BPOM, Dewi Prawitasari said, the signing of MoU is aimed to give firm sanction for the traders who breaking the rules and become warning for citizens to be careful in choosing foods and cosmetics.

"We cooperate with Jakarta Provincial to fulfill the people's needs in their nutrition. After the controlling effort for hazardous substances, we will report the result to lab. Later, the traders who caught selling the hazardous substances will be guided by BPOM and Jakarta Small and Medium Enterprises Cooperatives Agency (KUMKMP)," she uttered.
